As summer break winds to a close on the Pacific Lutheran University campus, so too does several major construction projects involving PLU athletic facilities.
The new synthetic turf field installation is nearing completion and is scheduled to be ready for the start of fall season sports practices. The men's and women's soccer teams will be the first to get on the field when their preseason practices get underway this coming Friday, Aug. 17. The pool, after closing in January due to damage caused by severe weather, has new beams supporting the roof. There are other changes, too. The drains are being replaced and, by the end of the summer, the pool will have a new coat of paint, new lockers and a new floor, said John Kaniss, PLU’s director of construction management. A new entrance to the pool will be constructed and all the glass will be replaced.
Several other major changes are in the offing, including a new synthetic turf infield for the baseball program, and a "facelift" for Names Fitness Center. According to Kaniss, Names has already received a new coat of paint, and new voltage lines will be installed for big-screen televisions that will be installed in the near future. Additionally, new weight lifting and fitness equipment will provide attractive new options for the entire PLU community.
