Godfrey Sharp, Offense Busts Out in 15-2 Victory

HAPPY VALLEY, Ariz. - Kipp Godfrey allowed only two unearned runs in six innings of work on Friday afternoon to lead Pacific Lutheran to a 15-2 win over McMurry (Tex.) at the Arizona Desert Classic played at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.

Godfrey, a sophomore from Corvallis, Ore., was sharp on the hill for the Lutes, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out seven batters. A pair of PLU freshman finished the game without allowing another hit. AJ Konopaski struck out two in one inning of work, and Jacob Otness struck out two and walked two in the final two innings.

Brock Gates and Sammy Davis, both of whom had a home run among their two hits yesterday, again led the Lutes offense today. Gates was 3-for-6 with two doubles and three runs batted in, while Davis finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Pacific Lutheran scored four runs on three hits, two walks and two passed balls in the top of the second inning. Davis collected a two-run single during the frame.

After McMurry scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, the Lutes tallied single runs in both the third and fourth. In the third, Jacob Hoffman walked, stole second, and then scored on consecutive passed balls. The following inning, Dominick Courcy led off with a single, stole second, went to third on yet another passed ball, and then scored on a throwing error by the McMurry catcher.

Corey Moore's solo homer in the sixth inning put the Lutes on top, 7-2, and they finally put the game away for good with eight runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh. Gates had a run-scoring double early in the frame and came back later to drive in two more with another double. In between, Bo Pearson hit a RBI single, Courcy drove in two more with a base hit, and Trevor Lubking drew a bases-loaded walk.

PLU finished the game with 16 hits, including three from Ethan Ottemiller and two apiece from Pearson and Courcy. Moore and Courcy both scored three runs.

The Lutes continue play at the Arizona Desert Classic on Saturday afternoon when they play University of La Verne in nearby Anthem.
