HAPPY VALLEY, Ariz. - Nathan Eisenhauer allowed only an unearned run in six innings of work and the offense supported him with 14 hits in an 11-4 win over Whittier in Sunday's final day of the Arizona Desert Classic baseball tournament at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.
Eisenhauer allowed only four hits while walking three and striking out three while picking up his first win of the season in his first start. He helped the Lutes finish with a 3-1 record at the 12-team Division III tournament. Jacob Otness and Nathan Shoup split the final three innings on the mound.
Dominick Courcy led the Lutes with three hits, three runs and two runs batted in. Sammy Davis had two hits and drove in three runs, and Ryan Frost, Bo Pearson, Jaron Iwakami and Curtis Wildung all added a pair of hits. Courcy, Corey Moore and Brock Gates all had a pair of RBI for the Lutes, who are now 4-2 overall this season.
Whittier scored an unearned run in the top of the first before the Lutes added single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Iwakami had a RBI double in the second, and the other two runs came with help from errors by the Poets.
PLU broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh. In the sixth inning, Courcy hit a two-out, two-run triple and and then scored on a run-scoring double by Davis. The five-run fifth also came after two batters were retired. Moore hit a two-run single, Davis drove in another with a base hit, and Gates finished the rally with a two-run double.
The Lutes play their first home contest of the season next Saturday, Feb. 25, when they host Saint Martin's in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
