TACOMA, Wash. - D3baseball.com released its All-Region teams on Tuesday with Pacific Lutheran University's Ben Welch and Landon Packard both earning a spot on the All-West Region Team. Welch landed a spot on the All-West Region First Team as a shortstop while Packard secured Second Team honors at second base.
Welch earns the honor after starting in 38 of the Lutes' 39 games this season. the First Team All-Northwest Conference selection boasted a .343 batting average at the plate, scoring a team-high 36 runs while collecting 30 RBIs and 17 extra base hits. In the field, Welch tallied 47 putouts and 164 assists to anchor a Lute defense that led NCAA Division III in fielding percentage while sitting fourth in the nation in double plays turned per game. Welch was one of just three NWC student-athletes to inhabit the 14-player First Team.
Packard secures Second Team honors after starting in 38 games for PLU. The senior led the NWC in RBIs (46) and ranked second in batting average after hitting at a .377 clip. The Puyallup, Washington, native and First Team All-NWC selection additionally paced the Lutes in extra base hits (21), home runs (seven), triples (four), and slugging percentage (.623). In the field, Packard boasted a .995 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 192 chances at second base, helping make Pacific Lutheran one of the premier fielding team's in the nation.
PLU wrapped up the 2017 season with a 25-14 record and a 17-8 mark in Northwest Conference play.
