TACOMA, Wash. - The accolades continue to roll in for Pacific Lutheran University baseball student-athletes Ben Welch and Landon Packard, both securing a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association's (ABCA) All-West Region Team. Welch earned First Team honors as a shortstop while Packard was a Second Team selection at second base, mirroring the All-Region awards given out by D3baseball.com.
"Landon and Ben had a great senior season and they had a positive impact on our team in so many ways on and off the field," said Head Coach Nolan Soete. "Their defense was exceptional all year and they both had a spectacular year at the plate. I have been a part of this program for 17 years and I can say without a doubt that they are the best middle infielders I have seen represent this program."
Welch, a First Team All-Northwest Conference and First Team D3Baseball.com All-Region selection, earns the ABCA honor after starting 38 of PLU's 39 games during the 2017 campaign. The Edmonds, Washington native led the Lutes in runs scored, touching home plate on 36 occasions while also sporting a .343 batting average with 30 RBIs and 17 extra base knocks. A sure-handed fielder, Welch led the team with 164 assists and helped the Lutes lead NCAA Division III in fielding percentage while ranking fourth in the nation in double plays per game.
A First Team All-NWC and a Second Team D3Baseball.com All-West Region honoree, Packard led the conference in RBIs (46) and finished second in the NWC in batting average (.377). Packard additionally led the Lutes in extra base hits (21), home runs (seven), triples (four), and slugging percentage (.623) while owning a .995 fielding percentage.
Pacific Lutheran concluded the 2017 season with a 25-14 overall mark and a 17-8 record in NWC action.
