For fans new to the Pacific Lutheran football program - and for those fans of Cal Lutheran attending Saturday's game between the teams at Puyallup's Sparks Stadium - take note that Saturday is a Puyallup Fair day. That, of course, usually means traffic and parking headaches around the stadium.
Sparks Stadium, a part of the Puyallup School District, is the home of Lute football. The stadium, located approximately 10 miles east of the PLU campus in the city of Puyallup, has an artificial surface and covered seating for approximately 4,500 people.
While the facility itself is among the finest in the region for small college football, its proximity - Sparks is one block from the fairgrounds - can create surprising and frustrating traffic issues for people attending PLU football games when the well-attended Puyallup Fair is underway.
That stated, consider this encouragement to plan your travel to Sparks Stadium accordingly: Give yourself plenty of extra time to deal with heavy traffic in and around Puyallup, for finding a parking space, and for the possibility of walking a number of blocks to get to the game.
To get to Sparks Stadium from Interstate 5, take exit 127 and go east on Highway 512 for eight to 10 miles. Once in Puyallup, take the Meridian Street exit and turn left onto Meridian. Follow Meridian to 7th Ave. SW and turn left. Sparks is located on the corner of 7th Avenue and 5th Street, the address is 601 7th Ave. SW, Puyallup, WA 98371.
Smoking is prohibited in the stadium, as are pets of any kind. Additionally, the Puyallup School District requests that fans stay off of the artificial turf following the conclusion of the games.
