Lutes Are In! PLU to Play at Linfield in Football Playoff Opener
Pacific Lutheran football fans didn't have to sit on the edge of their seats very long. The Lutes were announced as the second team in the NCAA Division III playoffs and will face Northwest Conference rival Linfield in an opening round game at noon on Saturday, Nov. 17.
PLU is one of seven "Pool C" conference runner-up teams to receive a berth in the national playoffs. Northwest Conference champion Linfield, which defeated PLU 31-24 during the regular season in Puyallup, is one of 24 conference winners to receive an automatic bid to the postseason.
While Linfield will be making its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA playoffs, Pacific Lutheran returns for the first time since the 2001 season. PLU made postseason trips from 1998-2001 and won the 1999 Stagg Bowl, the Division III championship, with a convincing 42-13 victory over Rowan (N.J.).
Linfield also won a Division III national championship in 2004 and made a semifinal appearance in 2009 where it lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The PLU vs. Linfield playoff game can be heard in the local area on KLAY 1180 AM with Steve Thomas and Karl Hoseth on the call. Linfield College provides a live video stream, which will be available at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/linfield.portal#.
