Hegge Earns NWC Men's Golf Player of the Year Honors
KENNEWICK - Dustin Hegge earned Player of the Year honors and Pacific Lutheran placed fourth in the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Tournament that came to a conclusion after a two-day run at Canyon Lakes Golf Course.
By virtue of a trio of top-three finishes in the conference's "major" tournaments (Fall Classic, Spring Classic and NWC Championships), including winning the NWC Fall Classic, Hegge earned the highest point total and with it NWC Player of the Year recognition. Joining the PLU sophomore on the all-conference team was senior Daron Casey, who scored enough points in the three tournaments to earn second team all-conference recognition.
Linfield won the overall men's conference golf title, which is based on team performances in the three major tournaments, with a total of 31 points. Whitworth finished second with 25 points, followed by Puget Sound with 24, PLU and Whitman in a tie with 19, Pacific 10, George Fox and Willamette in a tie with 8, and Lewis & Clark 0.
Linfield won the NWC Men's Golf Tournament was Linfield with a two-day total of 596 based on rounds of 293 and 303. Whitworth scored 298-301 - 599 to place second, followed by Puget Sound with 303-303 - 606, and PLU 303-311 - 614. Rounding out the team scoring were Pacific 311-312 - 623, Whitman 319- 3-1 - 632, Willamette 314-320 - 614, George Fox 325-320 - 645, and Lewis & Clark 376-364 - 740.
Linfield's Alex Fitch, the first-day leader with a four-under-par 68, shot a 74 today and won the tournament with a 142, two-under on the par 72, 6,683-yard layout. Puget Sound's Nick Kelley placed second with 73-74 - 147, followed by Hegge with 69-79 - 148.
Rounding out the PLU scoring were Casey with 79-73 - 152, Tim Livermore 76-80 - 156, and Sam Hodge 79-79 - 158. Senior Scott Zhang was disqualifed after the first round because his card was not signed by a playing partner. He shot an 81 today to close out his PLU career.
