WALLA WALLA - Dustin Hegge carded a three-under-par 69 on the 6,760-yard Wine Valley Golf Club layout and is tied atop the leaderboard after Sunday's opening round of the Whitman Men's Invitational golf tournament.

Hegge, a Pacific Lutheran junior, and Whitworth's Lyle Rudnicki hold a one-shot lead over four golfers, including Hegge's freshman teammate Justin Lee. Joining Lee at two-under 70 are Willamette's Ryan Kukula, George Fox's Chris Lumsden and Whitworth's Oliver Rudnicki. Those six golfers were all under par, and three more were at even par after the first round.

Whitworth fired a one-under-par 287 to lead the team scoring, though Pacific Lutheran is just five strokes back in second place after an outstanding four-over 292. Puget Sound is in third at 293, followed by Linfield 297, Whitman 299, Willamette 304, George Fox 313, and Lewis & Clark 338.

Of PLU's other four scorers, three are freshman. Seth Nickerson shot a 75, Sevryn Modahl 78 and Ryan Fenton 82. Sophomore Tim Livermore rounded out the Pacific Lutheran card with an 83.

"They played well," PLU head coach Kris Swanson said, "though it was a tough finish for Ryan and Tim. Overall, I'm pretty excited."

The tournament's final round is scheduled for Monday.
