BEND, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University surged up the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon, finishing the Willamette Spring Thaw at the Pronghorn Resort second overall.
The Lutes, competing in their final competition before the NWC Championships, sat fifth overall after Saturday's opening round before shaving off 17 strokes on Sunday to secure the runner-up finish at the eight-team event. PLU carded a 322 on Saturday before finishing Sunday with a 305, carding a 627 for the tournament to finish seven back from champion Linfield College (318-302). Whitworth University was four strokes behind the Lutes in third with a 631 (315-316).
Austin Darnell led the charge for the Lutes, tying for fifth overall, carding a 152 for the event. Darnell shot a 79 for round one before shooting a 73 in Sunday's final round. Jared Beals (83-73) and Luke Hall (76-80) tied for 12th overall with a 156 while Jordan Brajcich was 29th to round out the squad's scoring four, shooting a 167 (84-83).
PLU is in action on Saturday, heading to the Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood, Washington for the 2018 NWC Championships.
