TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's golf team is heading into this weekend's Northwest Conference Championships with challenging goals, looking to defend its conference title.
The Lutes are currently sitting in the top spot in the Northwest Conference, just one point ahead of George Fox University with two of the three conference events in the books. With a third place finish in the Fall Classic, and a victory in the Spring Classic, the Lutes are looking to bring their momentum forward into the championships, and hopefully a chance to return to the NCAA Division III Championships.
As this season wraps up, the Lutes will be losing a key aspect of their team atmosphere through the graduation of senior and 2017 NWC Golfer of the Year Mitchell Baldridge.
"I was blessed to play for a family of guys who are like brothers to me and will always be," said Baldridge. "Playing for this team has taught me so many life skills and I know that I will never forget the memories we created together. We have worked so hard to get this far and like Jordan Brajcich said last week we are peaking at the right time. I think making it to nationals this year will set the bar especially high for the years to come and will only make our team more experienced and mature on the course."
The Lutes have a traveling team of five athletes, and Baldridge is the only non-first year on the squad.
"This young team has some seriously bright years in front of them and I am so happy I gained eight more brothers before I graduated," he said. "There are a lot of guys staying home this weekend and cheering us on and that says a lot about our program and the type of teammates we are blessed to have."
The Lutes will be traveling to Oakbrook Golf Club for the Championships, and will tee off at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Oakbrook Golf Club.
