GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University men's golf squad opened up the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships on Tuesday, shooting a 303 during round one at Grandover Resort.

NWC Freshman of the Year Austin Darnell paced the Lutes in day one, carding a two over par 74. Darnell finished with four birdies during his round while shooting an even par on the back nine.

"I hit the ball very well today, the putter felt great throughout the day," said Darnell. "I made a triple on hole seven which killed some of my momentum but I hung in there and finished strong on the back nine."

Mitchell Baldridge and Jared Beals each finished with a 76. Jordan Brajcich was one stroke back with a 77 while Luke Hall rounded out the Lute contingent at the championships, carding an 86.

"Tomorrow the team and I have to go out and get the job done. There's a lot of golf to be played."

Only 24 of the 42 teams participating were able to finish out round one with afternoon play getting suspended due to inclement weather. PLU currently sits tied for 20th place and 10th among institutions that have completed an entire round. Guilford College and Emory University sit tied atop the leaderboard, both finishing with a five under 283 to open the championships.

Teams unable to finish round one will do so tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (Eastern) with round two to follow as a shotgun start at 11 a.m. (Eastern).
