Lutes Earn Academic All-District Men's Soccer Honors
A great year on the field for the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team has been complemented by the selection of four Lutes for their success in the classroom.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Rayburn (Portland, Ore. / Sunset HS), senior defender Aaron Grossberg (Corvallis, Ore. / Crescent Valley HS), and senior forward Spencer Augustin (Anchorage, Alaska / South Anchorage HS) have all been named to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII First Team. Senior forward Chad Kearns (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt HS) has been voted to the All-District VIII Second Team.
Those student-athletes will advance for possible selection to the Capital One Academic All-America team.
On the field, Rayburn is the team's top keeper and has compiled a 0.94 goals against average with five shutouts and 67 saves. He is majoring in Finance and Economics and has a 3.77 grade point average.
Grossberg, who was an academic all-region honoree by the national coaches association in 2010, has started all 17 of PLU's games this season at outside back. He maintains a 3.97 grade point average while majoring in Biology.
Augustin is among the Division III national leaders with 19 goals in 17 matches, and he is just two goals away from tying the PLU single-season record. He has a 3.39 grade point average as a Biology major.
Kearns, the 2010 Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, has scored 13 goals this season and 41 in his career, ranking him third on PLU's all-time list. He is a Business major and has a 3.34 grade point average.
District VIII encompasses Division III schools from the West Coast all the way back to Iowa, Texas and Louisiana. Student-athletes are nominated and voted on by their school's sports information directors.
