SPOKANE - Wheaton scored a pair of second half goals with a 3 1/2-minute span to beat the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team, 2-0, in Friday action at the Whitworth Soccer Classic.
Pacific Lutheran, 1-3 this season, faces Corban University at 3 p.m. Saturday while Wheaton, 3-0, faces tournament host Whitworth at noon.
Wheaton, ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Division III Top 25, got on the board at 62:14 when Stephen Russo ran onto Adam Blackman's corner and put it past Joe Rayburn. The second goal came at 65:55 on a penalty kick, with Josh Clark netting for the Thunder.
Wheaton took a total of 20 shots in the game, 10 on target, forcing eight saves from Rayburn. The Lutes had 10 shots total, and Wheaton keeper Ryan Seager finished with two saves.
Corner kicks went to PLU by a 9-4 tally.
