Rayburn Receives Academic All-District Recognition
Joe Rayburn, a junior goalkeeper who has helped lead Pacific Lutheran to a second place finish in Northwest Conference men's soccer, has earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 NCAA Division III First Team recognition.
Rayburn (Portland, Ore. / Sunset HS) was the only Northwest Conference representative on the District 8 team that includes Division III programs throughout 21 western states and Canada.
His name is advanced for consideration as a Capital One Academic All-American. Last year, PLU seniors Aaron Grossberg (first team) and Spencer Augustin (second team) earned Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Among the conference leaders with a 1.12 goals against average, Rayburn has started 17 matches for the Lutes, who are 10-6-2 overall and 9-3-1 in the conference. He was the team's starting keeper a year ago when Pacific Lutheran won the program's first conference title since 1992.
"Joe has been one of the conference's best keepers over the last two years, and he also takes his academic work very seriously. He really deserves this honor," PLU head coach John Yorke said.
Members of the College Sports Information Directors Association nominate and vote on student-athletes who meet various requirements including at least sophomore academic standing a a 3.30 grade point average or above.
The Lutes close their season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when they face the host Puget Sound Loggers.
