PLU Tops Caltech in Marathon Men's Tennis Match

PASADENA, Calif. - Pacific Lutheran defeated Caltech, 6-3, in a tight non-conference men's tennis match that started in mid-afternoon Monday and stretched into the early evening hours.

Half of the singles matches went into a decisive third set with the Lutes winning all of those matches to pull out the team victory.

The Lutes picked up two points in doubles as Scott Sheldon and Taylor Dickey defeated Devashish Joshi and Luke Mernick, 8-2, at No. 1, and Neal Berg and Reed Gunstone toipped Ben Lieber and Wesley Yu, 8-4, at No. 3.

Sheldon, Dickey and Daniel Cotton all picked up three-set singles wins to swing the match in PLU's favor. Sheldon topped Joshi, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1, Dickey downed Mernick 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2, and Cotton got the better of Lieber, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-5, at No. 4. PLU's other singles point came at No. 3 where Zach AhYat took care of Anish Agarwal, 6-4, 6-1.

The Lutes, 6-7 overall and winners of four straight matches, continue their California spring break trip on Tuesday afternoon when they play Chapman University in Orange.
