PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran closed out its 2012 men's tennis season Saturday afternoon with 5-4 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Willamette at the PLU tennis courts.
With the season sweep of the Bearcats, the Lutes end their season 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference, good for fifth place. Willamette ends its season 3-13 overall and 3-9 in the NWC.
The Lutes got off to an excellent start, sweeping all three doubles matches. Playing No. 1 doubles for only the second time this season, Dan Cotton and Luke Olson had an oustanding match against Willamette's highly regarded doubles duo of Cody Ferguson and Joshua Wong, taking an 8-5 victory.
The other two doubles matches were closer, both ending 8-6, and they swung the way of the home team. Taylor Dickey and Spencer Herron defeated Garrett Vincent and Cameron Thompson at No. 2 and Raymond DeLeon and Colton Heath combined for the first doubles win of the season, beating Will Cooper and Jack Schreiber at No. 3.
Pacific Lutheran needed just two wins in six singles matches, and it got the minimum to pick up the team win. At No. 3, Olson topped Vincent 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 4 it was Herron beating Cooper by the same score.
Willamette won the other four singles matches. At No. 1 it was Wong over Cotton, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 Ferguson topped Dickey 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 Will Agnew-Svoboda beat DeLeon 6-1, 6-2, and at No. 6 Schreiber defeated Kyle McKee 6-1, 6-2.
