Yannello Stays Alive in Consolation Singles Bracket
BEAVERTON, Ore. - It was a difficult Saturday for Pacific Lutheran at the USTA/ITA Division III Northwest Men's Small College Tennis Championship hosted by Pacific University.
Junior Neal Berg was the Lutes' only winner in the 64-player singles bracket, defeating Willamette's Jack Schreiber 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). He lost in the second round to ninth seed Brandon Schlack of Pacific, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), and was eliminated.
Dropping into the consolation bracket were Brandon Bulaclac, Luke Olson, Jake Yannello, Mitch Yannello, Hayden McCartney and Sam Angel. Jake Yannello stayed alive in the consolation bracket with wins over Cameron Williams from Whitworth and Peter Brown from George Fox, and Mitch Yannello beat Jake Peterson from UPS before being eliminated.
"We lost four out of five first round matches in third sets," PLU head coach Rocky Poulin said. "We had some tough breaks and the outcomes could have gone either way."
All three PLU doubles teams lost their first round matches and were bumped into the consolation bracket, where Berg and McCartney won their match to stay alive.
The event is being held at the Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation Center in Beaverton, with select matches taking place at the West Hills Racquet Club in Portland.
