WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis squad opened Northwest Conference play on Saturday afternoon, stumbling 9-0 on the road against preseason favorite and 24th-ranked Whitman College.

In doubles, PLU's (0-2, 0-1 NWC) Ryan Adams and James Okubo pushed the Blues' (5-2, 1-0 NWC) No. 1 tandem of Alex Hwang and Adam Rapoport before succumbing 8-6, while at No. 2 Niko Convento and Justin DeMattos fell, 8-3.

Adams battled at the No. 1 singles position, forcing a third set against Whitman's Raj Chikkalingaah before ending up on the wrong side of a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, scoreline. Convento was bested 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 while Okubo fell, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

"It was a tough result but we're getting ready for our home opener next weekend against UPS and Linfield," said Head Coach John Cassens.

The Lutes open their home slate next Saturday, hosting intracity rival University of Puget Sound at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
