LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team opened its spring break swing of southern California on Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-0 to host Biola University in a non-conference clash at the Biola Tennis Center.
"Our guys came out fighting in doubles," said Head Coach John Cassens. "Ryan and James lost a close 9-7 match and Keith made his PLU debut with Chan in a tough 8-6 match. The team was a little effected by the heat but are excited to get back on the courts tomorrow."
The Lutes' (3-6) No. 1 doubles tandem of Ryan Adams and James Okubo kept within striking distance of the Eagles' (8-8) top duo of Derek James and Lucas Lee, before eventually getting edged 9-7. Chan Thourk and Keith Petitt battled hard in an 8-6 setback at No. 3 doubles while the Lutes' No. 2 team of Justin DeMattos and Niko Convento fell 8-3.
In singles, John Woelfel dropped a three-set decision, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6, to Michael Vartuli while Convento kept things close in a, 6-4, 6-2, defeat at No. 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, Adams fell, 6-3, 6-1, to Biola's Lee.
PLU is back on the courts on Wednesday, facing Hope International University at 1 p.m. in Fullerton, California.
