BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University track & field teams competed in the first of several last chance meets on Saturday afternoon, sending seven throwers to the 36th-annual Ralph Vernacchia Invitational hosted by Western Washington University.
On the men's side, Lucas Hatton finished runner-up in the shot put. The 2017 Northwest Conference Champion in the event concluded the day with a toss of 49 feet, 2 1/4 inches while teammate Nate Jarvis was 11th with a throw of 35' 11 1/2". Michael Hatlen was fourth in the javelin (187' 5") while Jarvis finished with a mark of 112' 2" in the hammer throw.
On the women's side, Vakeaemanu Hunkin finished third in the shot put, uncorking a throw of 41' 7 3/4" while placing ninth in the hammer throw (136' 9"). Machaela Graddy (129' 7") and Olga Mogen (115' 2") finished seventh and 10th respectively in the javelin while Leah Johnson recorded a toss of 30' 4 1/4" in the shot put.
The Lutes return to action next weekend, sending select athletes to the Oregon Twilight Meet on Friday and others to the Linfield Open the following day.
