FOLSOM, Calif. - Pacific Lutheran placed third in the men's and women's pairs petite finals at Saturday's opening day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on nearby Lake Natoma.
In men's pairs, the Lutes finished fifth out of six in their preliminary heat. UC San Diego won the petite final with a time of 8:02.1, followed by Pacific (Calif.) in 8:05.7, PLU 8:16.4, and Long Beach State 8:24.0.
In women's pairs, PLU was fourth out of five in their preliminary heat. In the petite final, UC Davis won the race with a time of 9:21.5, followed by UCSD in 9:29.2, PLU 9:31.3, and California 9:38.6.
In the only other race involving PLU, the women's varsity 8+ for DII/DIII/Club teams, the Lutes placed fifth out of five in their heat and 10th out of 11 overall with a time of 7:20.6. They will race in the petite final at 11:10 a.m. Sunday.
The PLU men's varsity 8+ did not need to race on Saturday and is one of five boats entered in the DII/DIII/Club division grand final scheduled for 11:50 a.m. on Sunday.
