NFCA All-Region Teams

Stacey Hagensen and Kaaren Hatlen, two of the key members on the Division III Softball World Series bound Pacific Lutheran team, have earned first team All-West Region honors as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Hagensen (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport HS), was named to the first team for the second consecutive season, this time as a pitcher. She was selected as a utility player following the 2011 season. Hatlen (Woodinville, Wash. / Woodinville HS), a second team choice as a first baseman in 2011, earned first team recognition as a designated player.

Pacific Lutheran had three players named to the all-region third team: catcher Katie Lowery (Kennewick, Wash. / Southridge HS), shortstop Lindsey Matsunaga (Kaneohe, Hawaii / Kaimuki HS)and outfielder Montessa Califano (Renton, Wash. / Liberty HS).

Hagensen, the two-time Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Year and a three-time first team all-conference choice, is 24-5 this season with a 1.06 earned run average. Just named the Most Valuable Player after leading the Lutes to the championship of the NCAA Division III Softball Tyler Regional, Hagensen has struck out 121 and walked just 17 in 185 1/3 innings this season. She has allowed only 37 runs, 27 earned, while limiting opponents to a .211 batting average. She ranks fourth on the team in hitting with a .366 batting average. She has eight doubles, five home runs, has driven in 34 runs and is perfect in nine steal attempts while hitting third for PLU throughout its season.

Hatlen leads the team in the three "triple crown" categories with a .442 batting average, 10 home runs and 55 runs batted in. She has 13 doubles and a .754 slugging percentage. Hatlen is PLU's No. 2 pitcher and has compiled a 13-4 record with a 2.90 earned run average. She is a two-time first team All-Northwest Conference selection. She was named to the all-tournament team at last weekend's Tyler Regional.

Both Hagensen and Hatlen have shined in the classroom as well and have earned Capital One Academic All-District VIII first team honors. Hagensen, a double major in mathematics and economics, has a 3.91 grade point average. Hatlen, a mathematics major, has a 3.95 grade point average. Both players are under consideration for academic All-America status.

Lowery has been a steadying force behind home plate for the Lutes. The sophomore catcher, a second team all-conference pick, has a .308 batting average with eight doubles and 25 runs batted in.

Matsunaga, named to the all-conference team for the second straight year, is a strong-armed shortstop who is hitting .254 with six home runs and 35 runs batted in.

Califano, also a first team all-conference outfielder, is PLU's second leading hitter with a .373 batting average. She also leads the Lutes with three triples and has eight steals. Califano earned all-tournament honors at the Tyler Regional.

Pacific Lutheran, with a 41-11 record, takes on Luther (Iowa) at 1:30 (EDT) Friday in an opening round game of the NCAA Division III Softball World Series in Salem, Va.
