Bailey Plumb Notches Three Hits in 6-0 Win; Lutes Split Doubleheader and Series with George Fox

Bailey Plumb Notches Three Hits in 6-0 Win; Lutes Split Doubleheader and Series with George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Lutes erupted for 12 hits en route to a 6-0 victory in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader with George Fox.

The win gave the Lutes (17-9, 9-7) a series split and much needed victory to avoid dropping three games behind conference-leading Whitworth.

Freshman Bailey Plumb had the best game of her young PLU career going 3-for-4 at the plate following her two hit performance in Game 1.

It was Plumb who kick-started the offense as the Lutes grabbed the lead in the fourth inning for the second consecutive day. Plumb and Emily McConnell led off the inning with consecutive singles and scored on back-to-back doubles by Nichole Schroeder and Amanda Hartley giving the Lutes a 3-0 lead. Hartley advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a first and third play that saw Alison Behrends steal second base.

The Lutes carried their 4-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Three consecutive singles by Amy King, Thalen Masada and Plumb loaded the bases for McConnell who brought home King with a sacrifice fly to center field. Schroeder then singled to left field pushing Masada to third base. Masada then scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring for the Lutes.

The offensive outburst was more than enough support for Elli Rassbach. The sophomore pitched a complete game giving up five hits and striking out five to earn her 10th victory of the season.

The Lutes dropped Game 1 of the doubleheader, 5-2. Masada, Schroeder, Hartly and Plumb each had two hits in the game, but the Lutes left eight runners on base.

QUOTABLE…

On the race for the Northwest Conference championship:

"With three weeks left, our team's ability to make adjustments quickly will have a lot to do with our success. Our pitching has been consistent all year so I believe it will come down to how our offense responds." – PLU head coach Lance Glasoe

WHAT IT MEANS…

The Lutes leave Newberg with a 2-2 series split and tied with George Fox for third place in the NWC. The Lutes return home to face Linfield before traveling to Spokane to face Whitworth.
