SPOKANE, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran softball team travelled to Spokane Saturday to face Whitworth for the first half of the weekend doubleheader. While the Lutes put up a good fight, they were ultimately unable to get a win against the top team in the Northwest Conference.
The first game saw the Pirates get off to a great offensive start, scoring in each of the first three innings including a three-run second to take a 5-0 lead. The Lutes cut into the lead when Kathryn Hatlen's single to left field brought two runs in. The Lutes comeback would ultimately fall short, though, as the Pirates took the first game 5-2.
The Lutes responded in the first inning of the next game by scoring off of a single from Amanda Hartley to take a 1-0 lead. Becca Sorenson added a run to that lead in the sixth by sending Hartley home on a single.
However, the final inning of the second game was marred by a couple of Lute errors, as Whitworth scored three unearned runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh to go up 3-2, taking the game and the day.
ON TAP FOR THE LUTES…
The Lutes will get another chance at Whitworth on Sunday, though, as they'll take the field at noon for another doubleheader. The games will be broadcast locally in Spokane, and available through GoLutes.com.
