Castillo Wins 100 Butterfly at CLU Swim Meet
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Toni Castillo won the women's 100 butterfly as Pacific Lutheran placed fourth in both the women's and men's divisions at the CLU Winter Invitational swimming meet held today at the Cal Lutheran pool.
Castillo, a frosh from Sunnyside, Wash., was near her season best, clocking 59.78 to win the event. She had several other outstanding swims for the Lutes, placing second in the 50 freestyle (25.51), fourth in the 100 free (57.51), and second in the 25 free (11.74).
UC Santa Cruz won the women's meet with 873 points, followed by Whitworth with 645.5, Cal Lutheran with 457.5, and PLU with 324.
On the men's side, it was Whitworth with 951.5, Cal Lutheran 699.5, UC Santa Cruz 419, and PLU 386.
Other top-eight swims by the PLU women were as follows:
Michelle Hogan - fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.60), 100 freestyle (57.56), and the 200 individual medley (2:24.03), and seventh in the 50 freestyle (26.36);
Rachel Althauser - eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:53.00);
Darla Avis - seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:06.26).
For the PLU men, junior Chase Mesford had a pair of second-place finishes with season-best times in the 50 freestyle (22.26) and 100 freestyle (48.72). He also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:49.89) and seventh in the 25 freestyle (10.30).
Other top-eight swims by the PLU men were as follows:
Rayan Carter - fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.09), seventh in the 50 freestyle (22.71), and fifth in the 25 freestyle (10.28);
Jake Dacus - fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.30);
Corban Elliott - fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:10.71);
Basil Whaley - sixth in te 200 backstroke (2:12.44);
Joseph Parker - eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:14.49);
Andre Tacuyan - sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.44);
Alexander Dassoff - seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.52);
Justin Thornley - sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:12.59);
Jacob Deines - fifth in the 100 butterfly (56.35).
