PLU Swimmers Have Sprint Fest at Opening Meet

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Pacific Lutheran opened its 2012-13 swimming season Saturday evening with some solid performances at the NWC Sprints hosted by Pacific University.

In the NWC Sprints, or sprint pentathlon, swimmers compete in five events - 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, and 50 freestyle. Their individual event times are combined to determine the overall placing.

The Lutes women placed second with 192.5 points behind Whitworth's 271 points. Pacific was third with 127.5, followed by Whitman with 121.5, Linfield 55.5 and Willamette with 7.

On the men's side, Whitman scored 268.66, Whitworth 249.83, PLU 112, Pacific 87, Linfield 37 and Willamette 20.5

"The women finishing second is a nice step forward," PLU head coach Matt Sellman, adding that "the men showed well" despite missing sophomore standout Joseph Parker.

In the women's division, Michelle Hogan placed sixth with a time of 3:03.71, and Toni Castillo finished eighth with a 3:06.02. Whitworth swimmers held down the top three spots and four of the first five. The overall winner was Whitworth's Samantha Smith with a time of 2:58.33.

Other PLU female swimmers to finish in the top 25, their place and time: Nicole Schalk, 14th, 3:08.99; Kina Ackerman, 16th, 3:09.48; and Hannah Armstrong, 20th, 3:10.05.

Pacific Lutheran had some top 10 finishers in individual women's events.

100 IM: Castillo, fifth, 1:04.89; Hogan, seventh, 1:05.19; Ackerman, ninth, 1:05.75.

50 butterfly: Castillo, second, 27.29; Hogan, fifth, 27.90; Schalk, sixth, 28.20; Kristin Nueneker, seventh, 28.22; and Natasha Sioda, 10th, 28.52.

50 backstroke: Hogan, fifth, 29.54; Schalk, seventh, 29.92; Darla Avis, 10th, 30.06.

50 breaststroke: Ackerman, 10th, 34.21.

50 freestyle: Castillo, fourth, 25.82; Hogan, seventh, 26.07; Kelly Jernigan, ninth, 26.14.

On the men's side, Brian Ruggles led the way for the Lutes by finishing third overall with a combined time of 2:39.87. Dan Simons placed 11th with a time of 2:43.39, Chase Mesford was 15th in 2:44.50, and Basil Whaley finished 25th in 2:48.12.

Whitman had three of the top five male finishers, including Karl Mering who won the title with a combined time of 2:38.49.

Individual event top 10 finishers for the Lutes were the following:

100 IM: Ruggles, fourth, 55.86

50 butterfly: Ruggles, ninth, 25.09.

50 backstroke: Mesford, seventh, 26.61.

50 breaststroke: Ruggles, fifth, 29.17; Simons, 29.21.

50 freestyle: Mesford, third, 22.32; Ruggles, fifth, 22.68.

The Lutes are back in the water right away, competing 11 a.m. Sunday at the NWC Relays hosted by Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
