PLU Swimmers Place Third at NWC Relays

PORTLAND, Ore. - Whitworth swimmers won nine of the 15 events to take the team title and Pacific Lutheran placed third at the NWC Relays hosted by Lewis & Clark College on Sunday.

Whitworth scored 89 points, 19 points better than Whitman, which won five of the events. Pacific Lutheran scored 53 points, followed by Puget Sound with one event win and 49 points. Pacific was fifth with 30 points, followed by Lewis & Clark with 21, Linfield 13 and Willamette 5.

The Lutes had several second-place performances on Sunday, starting with the women's 300 backstroke team of Darla Avis, Michelle Hogan and Natasha Sioda in a time of 3:09.99. 

The PLU team of Chase Mesford, Nicole Schalk, Brian Ruggles and Toni Castillo placed second in the mixed 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.41.

In the day's final event, the mixed 400 freestyle relay, PLU's team of Mesford, Hanna Armstrong, Ruggles and Castillo clocked 3:28.58 to finish second.

PLU swimmers Castillo, Kelly Jernigan and Schalk placed third in the 300 butterfly relay with a time of 3:07.72. The Lutes men also finished third in the same event with Daniel Simons, Jacob Deines and Phil Rempe clocking 2:48.22.

In the men's 300 breaststroke relay, Daniel Pedack, Alexander Dassoff and Ruggles combined for third place with a time of 3:14.04. Simons, Basil Whaley and Deines finished third in the 300 medley relay with a time of 2:56.51, and Connor Osterlund, Justin Murrell and Corban Elliott combined for a third place in the 900 freestyle relay with a time of 9:08.97.

Pacific Lutheran is scheduled to open the dual meet portion of its 2012-13 season when Lewis & Clark visits the PLU pool starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
