Swimmers Make Dual Meet Debut This Weekend

COMING UP: After some solid swims during the opening weekend of the season, Pacific Lutheran opens the dual meet portion of its 2012-13 season this weekend against Northwest Conference foes Lewis & Clark and Pacific. PLU swims against Lewis & Clark starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and versus Pacific at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

PLU WOMEN FINISH SECOND AT NWC SPRINTS: The 2012-13 season got off to a great start for Pacific Lutheran as the Lute women placed second with 192.5 points behind Whitworth's 271 points. Pacific was third with 127.5, followed by Whitman with 121.5, Linfield 55.5 and Willamette with 7. Whitman won the men's event with 268.66 points, followed by Whitworth with 249.83, PLU 112, Pacific 87, Linfield 37 and Willamette 20.5. In the NWC Sprints, or sprint pentathlon, swimmers compete in five events - 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, and 50 freestyle. Their individual event times are combined to determine the overall placing. "The women finishing second is a nice step forward." PLU head coach Matt Sellman. Sophomore Michelle Hogan placed sixth with a time of 3:03.71 and sophomore Toni Castillo finished eighth with a 3:06.02. Other PLU female swimmers to finish in the top 25, their place and time: Nicole Schalk, 14th, 3:08.99; Kina Ackerman, 16th, 3:09.48; and Hanna Armstrong, 20th, 3:10.05. Freshman Brian Ruggles led the way for the Lutes men by finishing third overall with a combined time of 2:39.87. Daniel Simons placed 11th with a time of 2:43.39, Chase Mesford was 15th in 2:44.50, and Basil Whaley finished 25th in 2:48.12.

LUTES THIRD AT RELAYS: Whitworth swimmers won nine of the 15 events to take the team title and Pacific Lutheran placed third at the NWC Relays hosted by Lewis & Clark College last Sunday. Whitworth scored 89 points, 19 points better than Whitman, which won five of the events. Pacific Lutheran scored 53 points, followed by Puget Sound with one event win and 49 points. Pacific was fifth with 30 points, followed by Lewis & Clark with 21, Linfield 13 and Willamette 5.

PLU, PACIFIC SPLIT: Pacific Lutheran split its 2012 conference dual with Pacific. The PLU men won eight of 11 events to defeat the host Pacific Boxers, 140-65, while in the women's competition Pacific won a close 114-91 decision.

LUTES SWEPT PIOS: In last season's dual against Lewis & Clark, the Lutes picked up a conference sweep. The men's dual wasn't in doubt from the outset as the Lutes took first and second in the opening 200 medley relay on the way to a convincing 147-56 victory. The women's competition was much closer, however, as the Lutes built a big lead early and then held off a late charge by the Pios, 112-93.

PLU IN 2011-12: The PLU men finished the 2011-12 season with a perfect 6-0 dual meet record, including a 5-0 mark in the conference. The women, meanwhile, were 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the NWC. The team had a January road trip to Whitworth and Whitman snowed out.
