PLU Swim Teams Leave Pioneers in Their Wake

PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran opened its Northwest Conference dual meet schedule on Friday night by sweeping the Lewis & Clark Pioneers. The Lutes men won handily, 147-54, and the women held off a stern Pios challenge, 111-94.

The PLU women opened the meet with a nearly 2.5 second victory in the 400 medley relay as Michelle Hogan, Rachel Althauser, Toni Castillo and Kelly Jernigan churned through the water in a time of 4:12.89.

Kina Ackerman and Hanna Armstrong made it two more wins in a row for the home squad with Ackerman taking the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:18.92 and Armstrong pulling away to clock 2:00.97 and win the 200 freestyle by nearly five seconds.

Lewis & Clark's Rachael Cazden interrupted the Lutes' victory streak with the first of her two event victories, touching first to win the 50 freestyle in 25.31. One of the top freestyle sprinters in the conference, Cazden came back later in the evening to win the 100 freestyle in a time of 55.82.

In between Cazden's two wins were victories by Ackerman in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:21.91, and by Lewis & Clark's Monica Castro in the 200 butterfly in 2:21.22. The Pioneers picked up two more event victories, the first from Becca Robbins in the 200 backstroke as she clocked 2:19.87, and the other from Katy Yeh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:36.85.

PLU's Armstrong sandwiched her second event victory between the wins by Robbins and Yeh. Armstrong took the 500 freestyle, clocking 5:24.78.

The Pacific Lutheran women closed out the meet like they had started it, winning the final relay event. This time is was Darla Avis, Rachael Nelson, Natasha Sioda and Melissa Dean who took first in a time of 3:53.64. That squad finished second but the PLU A team was disqualified.

Men: PLU 147, Lewis & Clark 54

The Lutes men won eight of the 11 events in picking up the easy victory. Basil Whaley, Brian Ruggles, Jacob Deines and Chase Mesford opened with a victory in the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:43.32, while Phil Rempe, Daniel Simons, Tyler Meade and Whaley closed the meet with a winning 3:29.27 in the 400 free relay.

For Lewis & Clark, Trevor Schapiro won the 1000 freestyle in 10:36.25 and also the 500 freestyle in 5:19.21. The other Lewis & Clark event winner was Luke Engstrand, who took the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.63.

Ruggles won two individual events for the Lutes. He touched first in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.43, and he came back two events later to win the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.67.

Other event winners for the Lutes were Mesford in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.51, Rempe in the 50 free in 23.12, Andre Tacuyan in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.98, and Corban Elliott in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.26.

PLU is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts the Pacific Boxers in another Northwest Conference dual meet.
