WALLA WALLA – The Whitman offense erupted for 55 second-half points to pull away to a 90-56 Northwest Conference women's basketball win over Pacific Lutheran Friday night at Sherwood Center.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Whitman improves to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the NWC. The Lutes head to Spokane Saturday to take on Whitworth, with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
Bailey Raines led PLU with 11 points, hitting two of her three three-point attempts, while Megan Abdo scored nine points and Lacey Nicholson tallied eight points and four rebounds. Heather Johns led Whitman with 24 points and added eight assists to lead a group of five Missionaries in double-figures.
Whitman scored 13 straight points early to turn a 6-6 tie into a 19-6 lead, and the Missionaries stretched the lead to 17 points before PLU scored the final seven points of the period to go into the break down 35-25. The Missionaries came out strong to open the second period with eight straight points and never looked back.
Whitman finished the night with a .542 overall shooting percentage (39-of-72) compared to 40.8 percent for the Lutes (20-of-49). The Missionaries finished the night with a 39-31 rebounding advantage and forced 21 turnovers.
