NWC SPRING CLASSIC: The Pacific Lutheran women's golfers will descend on Wildhorse Golf Course in Mission, Ore., this weekend for the NWC Spring Classic golf tournament. Mission is located several miles east of Pendleton in northeastern Oregon. The women will compete this weekend on a par-72 Wildhorse course set at 5,837 yards.

TEE TIMES: The two-day, 36-hole tournament gets underway Saturday with the women teeing off at 8:30 a.m.. Sunday's closing round has the women starting at about 11:30 a.m.

RECENT PLU RESULTS: The PLU women's team enters the NWC Spring Classic fresh off of a fifth-place finish at the UC Santa Cruz Invitational held on Monday and Tuesday of this week at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Lutes carded rounds of 376 on Monday and 377 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 753. Julie Heffernan led the way for the Lutes with rounds of 90 and 92 for a total of 182. She was followed by Kristina Norlin's 95-93 - 188, Paige Henry's 89-101 - 190, and Karina Shelton's 102-91 - 193. Cal State-East Bay won the team title with a 657 total.

ABOUT THE SPRING CLASSIC: The NWC Spring Classic counts for 25 percent of the scoring in a season-long point system used to determine the women's and men's conference champions.  The George Fox women and Puget Sound men won last October's NWC Fall Classic tournaments, which also count for 25 percent of the overall championship scoring. Once this weekend's tournaments are in the books, teams will regroup and head to the Tri-Cities in late April for the two-day NWC Championships. Results from those tournaments count for the final 50 percent of the scoring used to determine the final standings and team titles. The women's and men's team champions earn the NWC's automatic berths in their respective national tournaments.

NWC FALL CLASSIC SUMMARY: The NWC Fall Classic was held Oct. 22-23 at Heron Lakes in Portland, Ore. George Fox won the team championship for the second straight year, shooting a 313-312 for a two-day total of 625, 13 strokes better than runner-up Whitman's 638 (320-318). Rounding out the team scores were Willamette 671 (342-329), Linfield 679 (340-339), Whitworth 681 (344-337), Pacific Lutheran 712 (357-355), Pacific 781 (403-378), and Puget Sound 884 (448-436). Lewis & Clark did not have a complete team. George Fox also had the top two finishers, Megan McGrew taking medalist honors with a six-over-par 150 (74-76), followed by Kelsey Morrison at 152 (78-74). Whitman's Tate Head was third with a 155 (75-80).

CURRENT NWC STANDINGS: Based on the Fall Classic results, George Fox has 8 points, followed by Whitman7, Willamette 6, Linfield 5, Whitworth 4, PLU 3, Pacific 2, and UPS 1. Lewis & Clark did not have a complete team.

LAST YEAR'S SPRING CLASSIC RESULTS: Whitman edged George Fox by a single stroke to win the 2011 Spring Classic at The Links at Hawks Prairie in Lacey, Wash. Whitman's Katie Zajicek won medalist honors by six strokes over her nearest competitor. While Zajicek is back for the Missionaries, returning players for George Fox include Jill Westendorf, who was fourth at last spring's event, and Kelsey Morrison, who tied for fifth. Whitworth, third in the team scoring last spring, returns Emily Guthrie, who finished in a fifth-place tie in the individual scoring.
