RIDGEFIELD, Wash. - The nationally ranked George Fox golf team won the Northwest Conference Fall Classic on Sunday, while Pacific Lutheran had a much better day in placing sixth. The tournament, hosted by Pacific University, was held at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course.
After struggling to a 393 in bad weather on Saturday, Pacific Lutheran enjoyed better conditions on Sunday to card a very competitive 349. The 742 total was good for a sixth-place finish.
George Fox blew away the field, scoring rounds of 314 and 315 for a two-day total of 629. Whitman carded a score of 681 to finish second. Whitworth placed third at 692, followed by Willamette 704, Linfield 705, Pacific Lutheran 742, Pacific 793 and Puget Sound 855.
The first of three counting tournaments towards the NWC championship, the teams earn one point for every team they beat in the Fall Classic toward the championship point standings.
Kelsey Morrison from George Fox took advantage of the better weather to lower her score by two strokes on the second round, carding a one-over-par 73 to finished the tournament with a score of four-over-par 148. She led the Bruins to a team score of 629, blowing past second place Whitman by 52 strokes. Whitworth's Emily Guthrie placed second, also turning in a 73 in the second round to finish at nine-over-par 153.
For Pacific Lutheran, Paige Henry led the way with 96-84 - 180, good for 20th place overall. Rounding out the PLU scores were Kristina Norlin 92-91 - 183, Julie Heffernan 103-86 - 189, Emily Cook 102-88 - 190, and Cierra Pettit 119-111 - 230.
The NWC Fall Classic concludes the fall portion of the 2012-13 season. Pacific Lutheran is currently scheduled to resume its season on March 2-3 when it hosts an invitational tournament at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club.
