TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's golf team is heading to Richland, Washington this weekend for Whitman College's Sunshine Invitational held at the Columbia Point Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The Lutes are coming off of a hot start to the spring season last weekend, placing second at the PLU Invitational. PLU shot a 702 at the tournament, owning a 21-stroke edge on third place and crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound after making a 10-stroke improvement from day one to day two.
Sophomore Sami Briney had an incredible competition, coming in at a tie for fourth with teammate Nicole Matiatos. Briney recorded a personal best at 80 strokes on Sunday, finishing the two-day invite with a 168.
"I feel like I have been waiting a long time to see the payoff of the work that has been put in," said Briney. "I was finally able to put together a full solid round and it was exciting to see that happen."
For Briney, the PLU team has served as a community that she had no idea would be so influential on her.
"My favorite part of being part of this team is the friends and memories I have made. There are countless memories that I will never forget and friends that this team has created that will last a lifetime," said Briney. "I'm just short of being half way through my career here at PLU and I couldn't have imagined that I would have already made so many great memories with my teammates."
This year has a fairly young PLU team, and Briney serves a leadership role on the team.
"We have graduated five seniors within the last year and this shows how young of a team we are. The goal for this year is to continue to grow both in our individual golf games and as a team. We are a team of thee freshman, one sophomore, and one graduating junior. This allows us to have so much learning potential and time for improvements. I really think this year's goals are about all about growth in the game of golf."
The Lutes tee off at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at Columbia Point Golf Club in Richland, Wash.
