PLU Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener
PARKLAND - Marlena Hartman-Filson scored two goals and Niki Tomita added a goal and two assists on Thursday to lead the visiting Carleton College Knights past Pacific Lutheran, 6-1, in the 2010 women's soccer opener for both teams at PLU Field.
The Knights scored three goals in each half and put 10 of their 14 total shots on goal. Pacific Lutheran managed 10 shots, seven on goal, but managed just a second half goal from Dani-Rae Edwards.
PLU's scoring play came at 63:51 and started when Karli Hurlbut sent the ball down the left wing to Olivia Lee. Her cross was deflected into the path of Edwards, whose strong header beat Carleton keeper Beth Ashinsky.
Carleton opened the scoring at the 11:47 when Tomita took a pass from Lily Vanderstaay and beat keeper Ivory Harvey to the far post. The Knights added Linnea Carlson's goal at 27:59, the assist going to Tomita, and they made it 3-0 at 31:35 when Zoe Suche followed up a shot from a corner kick. The assists went to Cassie Burke and Megan Milligan.
The Knights made it 4-0 on Hartman-Filson's first goal, that coming at 48:47 when she collected a loose ball and scored from the top of the penalty box. Vanderstaay scored the team's fifth goal at 55:50, rippling the net after Sarah Hagerty's long-range effort crashed off of the crossbar. The visitors' final goal came at 84:38, Tomita setting up Hartman-Filson for an angled shot from the right side.
Ashinsky finished with four saves and her defensive teammates also cleared two balls off the line on a PLU corner kick in the first half. Harvey and Lauren Chambard each had a pair of saves in one half of action.
PLU returns to action at 4 p.m. Friday when it hosts St. Thomas, while Carleton plays Saturday at the University of Puget Sound.
