TACOMA, Wash. -California will once again be the destination for the Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team as the Lutes will head to Thousand Oaks to face Whittier College in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Lutes (16-3-1, 13-2-1 NWC) earned an automatic bid as a Pool A selection to the tournament after winning the NWC title for the second consecutive season and will face Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Champion Whittier (12-8) in the opening round on Saturday. The winner of the PLU/Whittier contest with face either at-large selection (Pool C) and host California Lutheran University (15-3-2) of the SCIAC, or Pool B selection University of California-Santa Cruz (5-14-1). The Banana Slugs earned an invitation to the tournament as a Pool B selection which is reserved for independents and schools from conferences that don't receive automatic bids.
This is PLU's eighth national tournament appearance and second straight. The Lutes qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program history last year while the previous seven trips were all as members of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), including winning NAIA National titles in 1988, 1989, and 1991.
