TACOMA, Wash. -Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer student-athlete Hailey Smoot was recognized by United Soccer Coaches as one of the top achievers in the classroom and on the pitch, earning a spot on the 2017 USC NCAA Division III Scholar All-West Region Team.
Smoot was one of 14 student-athletes to earn a spot on the Scholar All-West Region team and one of just two student-athletes from the Northwest Conference. The senior midfielder was joined on the team by the University of Puget Sound's Emily Prasil. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or above, start more than 50 percent of all games played, and have an academic standing of a junior or above.
The Scholar All-Region Award is just the latest in a series of accolades for the senior elementary education major. The Puyallup, Washington native was a First Team All-West Region and a First Team All-Northwest Conference selection this season, playing in all 22 games this season and making 20 starts. Smoot recorded the game-winning goal against Linfield College on Oct. 15 and helped the Lutes (17-3-2, 13-2-1 NWC) win the NWC title for the second consecutive season and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
