Lutes Beat Puget Sound for Second Win
April 10, 2009
Pacific Lutheran avoided the Northwest Conference cellar by pulling out an exciting 5-4 women's tennis win over the Puget Sound Loggers on Friday at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
With the victory, the Lutes end their season 2-17 overall and 2-14 in the conference, while Puget Sound finishes up 1-14 overall and also in the conference.
Entering Friday's match, the Lutes had won only three doubles matches all season, but they picked up two big wins to take a 2-1 lead over the Loggers. Ashley Brooks and Ashley Coats teamed up for a 8-3 win over Sam Taylor and Madison Holtz at No. 1, and Kristi Bruner and Mary Stang were 8-4 winners over Devin Field and Ashley Dombrow at No. 3.
Brooks and Coats had convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but it was a three-set win by Jessica Wilson at No. 5 that turned the tide in the Lutes' favor. Brooks handled Taylor, 6-1, 6-1, and Coats did the same to Alissa Wolf, 6-2, 6-1. Wilson had to work harder against Field before pulling out a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3 triumph.
