Lutes Head To Oregon To Face Bruins, Bearcats
THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran University woman's tennis team travels to Oregon this weekend to take on the George Fox University Bruins and Willamette University Bearcats. Sunday, the Lutes return home to take on Mills College from California. Coming off a tough weekend at home to open the season, the Lutes hit the road for the first time in 2011 looking for their first win of the year. Friday afternoon, PLU travels to Newberg, Ore., for a match against George Fox. Saturday, the Lutes will head to Salem, Ore. to take on Willamette. The next day, PLU returns home for a Sunday morning non-conference match with Mills.
SCOUTING THE BRUINS: George Fox comes into the match with the Lutes posting 1-1 record on the season. Last week, the Bruins lost to the University of Puget Sound, 7-2. GFU's one win came in the form of a 5-4 decision back on October 22, when they took on Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. The Bruins, who went 0-17 a season ago, are led by sophomore Molly Beaumont. Beaumont, who played as the teams No. 1 as a freshman, earned second team all-conference honors in 2010.
A LOOK AT THE BEARCATS: The Willamette Bearcats, who play at Lewis & Clark Friday afternoon, come into the weekend with a 1-3 record. After a season opening win in Salem, Ore. over UPS, Willamette has dropped their past three matches. Currently 1-2 in the NWC, Willamette dropped both matches last weekend when they faced Whitworth University and Whitman College. The Bearcats are led by Natalia Agarycheva. The 2010 NWC Player of the Year returns in 2011 for her senior campaign. This fall, Agarycheva won the USTA/ITA Small College Northwest Regional title in singles.
CYCLONE WARNING AHEAD: Posting a 2-1 record on the season, the Mills College Cyclones travel to Tacoma, Wash. for two matches this weekend. Before facing PLU on Sunday, the Cyclones will face UPS Saturday afternoon. The young roster, which features seven freshman, will face a combination of NCAA DIII and NAIA opponents this year as the team is an independent and does not play a conference schedule. The Sunday morning match with Mills begins a 9:00 a.m.
