GLENDALE, Calif. - Leah Newell defeated Rachel Buckner in singles play Wednesday afternoon but that was Pacific Lutheran's only team point as the Lutes dropped an 8-1 non-conference women's tennis decision to Occidental at Scholl Canyon.

Newell dropped down one spot to No. 2 singles and picked up the victory. All of the other singles matches went in straight sets to Oxy, which has a 5-4-1 team record. In doubles play, the closest match came at No. 2 where Cora Wigen and Valery Jorgensen lost by an 8-6 score to Frances Hutton and Rachel Washtien.

PLU, 1-11 this season, concludes its spring break trip on Thursday with a 12:15 match at La Verne.
