WALLA WALLA - Payton McGriff and Samantha Lund, two newcomers to the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis program, led the Lutes at the 2012 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted last weekend by Whitman College.
McGriff won her first two singles matches before falling to eventual champion Courtney Lawless from Whitman. McGriff opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Whitworth's Morgan McDivitt, and followed that with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Willamette's Rachel Heringer. Lawless, who lost only eight games in six matches, beat McGriff 6-1, 6-0.
Lund opened with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Whitman's Erin Minuth, but lost a super tiebreaker to Lewis & Clark's Gillian Lowe, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
Leah Newell and Catherine Miolla lost their opening singles matches, and both Allison McClure and Jessica Lancaster were defeated in play-in singles matches. Newell went on to win two consolation matches, while the other three all took one victory in the consolation round.
In doubles, Lund teamed with Newell to register an 8-3 opening-round win over Linfield's Kwynn Ecton and Kelly Watanabe, but they lost 8-4 in the second round to Lewis & Clark's Izzy Borris and Lisa Osepyan, who eventually reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champions Courtney Lawless and Alyssa Roberg.
McGriff and Tina Aarsvold lost their doubles opener, and the team of Miolla and McClure lost their play-in match.
