WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad wrapped up Northwest Conference play on Sunday, stumbling 8-1 to nationally-ranked Whitman College.
"Whitman is a tough team however the Lutes showed up to compete," said Head Coach Lorrie Wood. "The top three singles matches were especially exciting."
Caroline Dreher headlined the day for the visiting Lutes (2-14, 1-11 NWC), rallying from an early hole to take the, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3), win over the 28th-ranked Blues' (13-6, 11-1 NWC) Andrea Gu at No. 1 singles. The victory is Dreher's fourth singles win in her last five tries and her team-leading eighth win of the 2016-2017 campaign.
"Caroline started out slow and then found her game and dominated the second set and won the super tiebreaker."
"Both Bower and Beemsterboer battled well at No. 2 and No. 3 against very strong opponents, but came up short."
In doubles, Dreher and Megan Beyers fell 8-1 at No. 1 while Bower and Beemsterboer stumbled by an identical score at No. 2.
The Lutes wrap up the 2016-2017 season on Saturday, hosting College of Idaho at the Sprinker Recreation Center with matches slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
"We plan to work hard and enjoy our last week of practice before finishing up our season against College of Idaho."
