Hanna and Beaver Earn West Region Honors
For the second straight year, Pacific Lutheran outside hitter Beth Hanna has earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) West Region first team recognition. Hanna's teammate, setter Sarah Beaver, was named to the West Region honorable mention list.
Hanna and Beaver lead the Lutes, 20-6, into NCAA Division III region tournament first round action tonight in La Verne, Calif., against Nebraska Wesleyan, 19-9. The winner of the PLU versus Nebraska Wesleyan match will advance to face tournament host La Verne at 7 p.m. Friday. The region tournament championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to the eight-team NCAA Division III Championships scheduled for Nov. 20-22 at Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.
Hanna averages 4.01 kills and 3.73 digs per set this season and earlier this week received Northwest Conference Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. Last season, Hanna earned first team all-conference, all-region and All-America recognition, in addition to garnering national Division III AVCA Freshman of the Year honors.
Beaver, also named to the Northwest Conference first team, averages 10.0 assists per set for the Lutes, who this year won their third straight conference title - including a shared title with Linfield in 2006 - and their fourth in the past five seasons.
