FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Pacific Lutheran maintained its streak of
straight-set victories over Northwest Conference opponents,
defeating the host Pacific Boxers, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23, on Friday
night.
Kelcy Joynt led the Lutes with 13 kills, while Erin Bremond
recorded eight kills along with a .538 attack percentage as the No.
16-ranked Lutes improved to 13-5 overall and 9-0 in the conference.
During their nine-match winning streak they have won 27 consecutive
sets without a defeat. Kelsie Moore added nine kills, Brenna
Archibald finished with 14 digs and Sarah Beaver had 31 assists.
The Boxers (7-10, 2-7 NWC) posed little challenge to the Lutes
until the third set, where they bounced back from a four-point
deficit mid-set to challenge for the victory in the stretch.
PLU hit on all cylinders, posting a .260 hitting percentage for the
match while Pacific hit .077.
Alexa Block posted a double-double of 10 kills and 15 assists to
lead the Boxers. For the first time this season, Pacific did not
earn credit for a block.
After a close start to the first set, PLU put things in motion
to blow away the Boxers in the final two-thirds of the frame. The
Lutes used two attack errors and an ace by Blair Bjorkman to pull
away from a 6-6 tie to a 10-6 advantage. Pacific won just three
more points off of their own serve and six more points total as
Moore posted three kills and Joynt added two to cruise to the 25-12
win.
The Lutes pulled away early in the second set, pulling ahead 7-2
on a Bjorkman service ace. A kill by Joynt made it a 14-7
lead before five straight winners by Keleigh Kremers, three off PLU
attack errors, brought Pacific back to within 14-12. Attack
errors buried the Boxers from there as they committed six from that
point to allow the Lutes the 25-17 victory.
Pacific came out of the extended with some new fire in the third
set, taking a 3-0 lead early before seeing the Lutes ties it at
3-3. The two teams traded points until a Pacific ball
handling error gave the Lutes a 10-9 lead. That started a string of
four unanswered points for PLU and produced a 13-9 advantage.
The Boxers rebounded to tie it at 16-16 on a kill by Block.
The Boxers took the lead back at 19-18 on a PLU attack
error. The Lutes tied it again at 21-21 before a kill by
Joynt gave PLU the lead for good. A service ace by Kremers
gave the Boxers a chance to tie it at 24-23, but Moore placed a
kill right along the sideline to give the Lutes the match.
