The Department of Athletics & Recreation at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) reaffirms our commitment to anti-racism and a home for student-athletes that embraces different cultures, experiences, and opinions. We believe those attributes make us stronger and, as a department, are committed to ending the systemic social injustices that are prevalent in our communities.   Â
Â
In supporting our student-athletes, the Department of Athletics and Recreation staff members will continue to evolve our operations to build more equitable communities — within our teams, our department and campus community. Within this environment, sport programs and staff members will provide platforms of care and continued education, to allow for open dialogue within teams and across the department.   Â
Â
The department represents a large portion of campus student leaders. Thus, it is on us to provide these current and future leaders the opportunity to learn, grow, and affect change, not only within their teams but also on campus and in the community. We pledge to continue to elevate our work in order to position our student-athletes to flourish in an inclusive and anti-racist environment both now and in the future. Â
Â
Within our work, the following are specific actions we will take:
- Examine our staffing/hiring practices with the goal of obtaining a diverse staff that more closely resembles the student population at PLU
- Evolve the Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice programming and partnerships within the department for the purpose of elevating education and awareness of systemic social injustices and to be agents of change
- Provide feedback opportunities through end-of-season, student-athlete surveys. This communication process will allow for a direct interaction that can guide positive changes within the department.Â
- Promote campus initiatives that support anti-racism and equity to foster a community of support that will allow for further engagement and leadership within our teams.
Â
Finally, The Department of Athletics and Recreation commits to building an equitable and anti-racist community alongside and in partnership with our campus partners.
