Lutes LEAD

The Pacific Lutheran University athletic department emphasizes the holistic development of student-athletes, maintaining a high standard of excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

The Lutes LEAD program is a natural extension of the holistic development of our student-athletes. The formal program has three separate tracks for first-years, sophomores-juniors, and seniors that are geared towards giving Lute student-athletes the tools to be leaders on their team, in the classroom, and in the community.

Lutes LEAD is founded on three key principles:
  • Personal Development
  • Leadership Development
  • Career Development

In addition to the three distinct leadership paths, Lutes LEAD additionally hosts and annual Student-Athlete Networking Night, an event that connects current student-athletes with alumni from various professional fields.

PLUS 100
Transitioning from high school to the demands of being a college student-athlete can be difficult. In 2018, the football program piloted a student-athlete specific PLUS 100 class to help with that transition. The class proved to be a huge success with the program expanded in 2019 to include first-years in all 19 PLU athletic programs. The fall of 2021 marks the third consecutive year that first-year student-athletes from all 19 sports will participate.

The concept behind PLUS 100 is a simple but valuable one: a class designed to prepare college freshmen for success, both academic and personal.

PLU’s version of the course comes with all the benefits of a liberal arts lens, which means that these student-athletes aren’t just getting educated on how to score better on tests and produce better homework — they’re also learning about the world around them, their place in it and how they can better themselves and others as community members and global citizens.

Community Engagement:
PLU Athletics is committed to giving back to the community with student-athletes averaging over 3,000 hours of community service each year.

Some PLU volunteer initiatives include:

Special Olympics Basketball Clinic:
Held each year in January, Lute student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes from Metro Parks Tacoma combine for a fun day of skills and drills.

Annual Youth Sports Clinic:
Each May, youth in grades 1st through sixth from the community are invited to a FREE clinic featuring six sports stations taught by Lute student-athletes.

Winterfest:
Organized by the Parkland/Spanaway community, Winterfest is an event designed to support the community and ensure each child has a chance to enjoy the holidays.
