- When a student-athlete sustains an injury during a NCAA sanctioned practice or competition, it is the student-athlete's responsibility to report this injury to their coach and one of the Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC).
- It is then the duty of the ATC to evaluate and follow up with the athlete regarding treatment or possible referral to another medical provider.
- It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to follow up with an ATC to make sure they are following up with the treatment plan put forth by the Athletic Trainer.
- Clearance to return to practice and competition will be communicated by the ATC and/or team physician to the appropriate coach.
Services
- Medical services will be provided to all intercollegiate student-athletes by the Athletic Trainers and Sports Medicine Physician.
- Sports Medicine Physician appointments will be available on campus for student-athletes when deemed necessary by the Athletic Training Staff. Sports Medicine Physicians in most cases will be available twice a week.
- Sports Medicine Physicians will utilize local reliable referrals in order to give the best possible care for the student athlete.
- Medical services outside of the Athletic Training Room could incur charges and will be billed to the athlete’s primary insurance first.
- Secondary accidental insurance is provided to student-athletes that are injured during intercollegiate competition, games, and practices under the direct supervision of Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department. For more information please click on this link (link to insurance page)
Eligibility for service by the PLU sports medicine team
- You are a current member of a PLU intercollegiate athletic team.
- You have completed the pre-participation medical clearance documentation that includes: a health history, physical exam, insurance questionnaire, the PLU/NCAA HIPPA form and medical examination/authorization form. NCAA and departmental guidelines stipulate that this process be accomplished upon entrance into the athletic program.
- All updated and current forms are on file in the athletic training room. Medical exams are considered current if they have been performed within six months of the start of collegiate athletic participation. The exam is considered valid for 5 consecutive years.
- The medical exam is required prior to your first year of participation. The health history, insurance, HIPPA and examination/authorization forms require annual updating. These forms can be found online under the "NCAA Athletics Pre-Participation Packet" link. Certain medical situations may cause the student-athlete to undergo an additional physical examination which will be determined by the sports medicine staff.
- Athletic training online medical questionnaire is required to be filled out annually.
Information regarding injuries and medical conditions sustained by student-athletes is confidential. If the student-athlete is 18 years of age or older information regarding such conditions can only be communicated with people specifically named by the student-athlete on the Pacific Lutheran University Consent and Authorization for Use, Disclosure and Exchange of Student-Athlete Health Information Form.
