PORTLAND - Pacific Lutheran wrapped up an unbeaten Northwest
Conference volleyball season with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 17-25,
15-12 victory over the host Lewis & Clark College Pioneers on
Saturday night.
The Lutes, 20-6 overall, finished 16-0 in conference play this
season and increased their NWC winning streak to 29 matches going
back to last season. The Lutes await word from the NCAA regarding
their destination and opponent in next week's Division III regional
postseason tournament. PLU put in a bid to host a regional
tournament and should find out either Sunday night or early Monday
morning whether it will host or, for the fifth time in the last six
years, travel out of state for the regional event.
Kelsie Moore and Kelcy Joynt both finished with 17 kills to lead
the Lutes, who also got 51 assists and 19 digs from Sarah Beaver
and 28 digs from Brenna Archibald. Moore added 16 digs and Joynt
had 17 as the Lutes totaled 115 digs in the match. Erin Bremond
finished with nine kills and four block assist and Amber Roberts
added 10 kills.
In the deciding fifth set, the Lutes broke away from a 9-8
advantage with four straight points as Joynt and Moore sandwiched
kills around a pair of Lewis & Clark attack errors. Joynt
finished out the set with a pair of kills.
In its 16 conference wins, the Lutes won 12 times in three
straight sets, once in four sets and three times in the maximum
five sets. Playing the last two matches without two-time Northwest
Conference Player of the Year Beth Hanna, out for the remainder of
the season with a knee injury, PLU has been stretched to five sets
and yet still won.
