McMINNVILLE, Ore. - After playing to a stalemate through two
halves plus an overtime session, Pacific Lutheran topped Linfield,
2-1, on a Spencer Augustin goal in double overtime.
The thrilling Northwest Conference men's soccer victory propels
PLU to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Northwest Conference play. Linfield
slips to 2-4-1 and 1-1 in the NWC.
Augustin's game-winner came off a rebound right in front of the
net. After the ball was knocked around in the box, Augustin
found the ball at his feet and softly tapped in the winner. The
goal was a team-best fourth of the season for the sophomore
forward.
Neither team could score in the first overtime, though the Lutes
forced three saves from Jon Thompson. One minute into the
second overtime, Linfield's Colin Bebee hit a shot a foot wide
of the lower-right corner of the net. The Lutes got the ball to the
other end of the field where Augustin converted the match winner.
Linfield got the scoring going in the 39th minute on a goal from
Nick Jaurequi. The Wildcats' lead was only temporary as
PLU's Jason Bjorgo answered the bell with an unassisted goal, his
first of the season, in the 43rd minute. The second half was
full of missed opportunities for both clubs. Bebee broke deep into
PLU territory on multiple occasions, his best coming in the 67th
minute when his shot deflected off PLU goalkeeper Brian Kostol.
Chad Kearns had an opportunity to put the Lutes on top in the
72nd minute but his shot sailed wide after rebounding a corner
kick.
Pacific Lutheran enjoyed a 19-12 advantage in shots and it also
put 13 shots on goal, forcing nine saves from Thompson and also a
team save. Kostol came up with six saves as Linfield put seven
shots on target. The Lutes took eight corner kicks to five the the
host Wildcats.
