Augustin's Overtime Goal Lifts Lutes to Victory

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - After playing to a stalemate through two halves plus an overtime session, Pacific Lutheran topped Linfield, 2-1, on a Spencer Augustin goal in double overtime.

The thrilling Northwest Conference men's soccer victory propels PLU to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Northwest Conference play. Linfield slips to 2-4-1 and 1-1 in the NWC.

Augustin's game-winner came off a rebound right in front of the net. After the ball was knocked around in the box, Augustin found the ball at his feet and softly tapped in the winner. The goal was a team-best fourth of the season for the sophomore forward.

Neither team could score in the first overtime, though the Lutes forced three saves from Jon Thompson. One minute into the second overtime, Linfield's Colin Bebee hit a shot a foot wide of the lower-right corner of the net. The Lutes got the ball to the other end of the field where Augustin converted the match winner.

Linfield got the scoring going in the 39th minute on a goal from Nick Jaurequi. The Wildcats' lead was only temporary as PLU's Jason Bjorgo answered the bell with an unassisted goal, his first of the season, in the 43rd minute. The second half was full of missed opportunities for both clubs. Bebee broke deep into PLU territory on multiple occasions, his best coming in the 67th minute when his shot deflected off PLU goalkeeper Brian Kostol. Chad Kearns had an opportunity to put the Lutes on top in the 72nd minute but his shot sailed wide after rebounding a corner kick.

Pacific Lutheran enjoyed a 19-12 advantage in shots and it also put 13 shots on goal, forcing nine saves from Thompson and also a team save. Kostol came up with six saves as Linfield put seven shots on target. The Lutes took eight corner kicks to five the the host Wildcats.
