PARKLAND - Daniele Zaccagnini
scored a pair of goals and Chad Kearns added his
conference-leading 10th goal of the campaign as Pacific Lutheran
defeated George Fox, 5-1, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer
match played Saturday afternoon at the PLU soccer field.
With the victory, the Lutes improve to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-0
in the conference. George Fox, meanwhile, remained winless at 0-7-1
for the season and 0-5-0 in the conference.
The youthful Bruins came into the match with one goal all
season, but they came out with determination that was rewarded just
7:19 into the match when David Rickey scored on an assist from Sean
Jany. Rickey raced through the defense to latch onto Jany's pass
and slot the ball under PLU keeper Brian Kostol from about 10
yards out.
The score stayed that way for 15 minutes until Zaccagnini scored
the first of his two goals. The senior midfielder settled a
pass from Surafel
Wodajo just outside the box and hit a bullet inside the
left post for his fourth goal of the season. The Lutes made it 2-1
at 37:09 when Lucas
McCallum ran onto Mark
Lee's pass and scored from about 10 yards out.
After out-shooting the Bruins 12-4 in the first half, the Lutes
had long spells of possession in the second period. Zaccagnini
tallied his second goal of the game and his fifth of the season 11
minutes into the final half, running onto a though ball
from Kearns and slipping it under Bruins keeper Elliott Davis.
Kearns made it 4-1 at 64:03, heading home Giancarlo Santoro's cross
from the right wing, and Mohamed Bouzakraft
scored his first collegiate goal on a penalty kick at 76:00 after
Brenden Cohen was
pulled down in the box.
Kostol picked up the win in goal for the Lutes, though he didn't
have to record a save as the Bruins managed to put just one of
their eight shots on goal. Davis played 77 minutes and notched nine
saves, while Kasey Haugan had no saves in mop up work.
The Lutes finished with 21 total shots, including 14 on goal,
and PLU head coach John Yorke was able to play 24 different players
in the match.
